Richard Mishaan Joins Other Top Designers In Annual Home Transformation

The home transformed by top designers in this year’s annual project is a townhouse in New York by architect Charles Platt. The house is narrow but huge, over 10,000 square feet and worth over $26 million. GQ‘s article about this transformation explained the challenges designers overcame. The article focusses on “The 13 Most Common Design Mistakes—And How to Fix Them.” Louise Hart’s piece focuses on mistakes men tend to make when designing a room.

Here are thirteen top tips to keep in mind when you design:

  1. Neutrals for a masculine look need color as well in order to add light. You can see this balance play out beautifully in examples like this from Richard Mishaan.

  1. Rougher textures need to be contrasted with smooth or shiny ones. Consider adding the the sophisticated touch of quality architectural glass which is taking the design world by storm.

  1. Rooms are meant to be lived in not just looked at. Think comfort. Think of the activities you enjoy in your home and buy quality pieces that can enhance that experience.

  1. Arranging the furniture against walls is another mistake. Float some pieces instead.

  1. Keep searching until you find the pieces you love. Pinterest is one of my favorite way to browse and check out unique ideas.

  1. Think about proportion.

  1. A small space doesn’t have to mean small furniture. Cut down on the number of pieces.

  1. Showcasing favorite objects will put your personality in the room.

  1. Work with what the room offers. There are ways of camouflaging defects in a room.

  1.  Buy a couple of new pieces

  1. Do some research. There is information out there. Follow twitter accounts of leading design experts which can become a wealth of design wisdom.

  1. Don’t let someone else make your choices. You have to live in the space.

  1. Don’t spend too much money on items that don’t make a difference.

Mishaan says “I have had the same sofas for the past 20 years. They’ve been re-upholstered once, but I feel like if you buy good things one time, they’ll just last.” In an article by the New York Post the fabulous designer Richard Mishaan lays out even more helpful ideas to be mindful of.
