80s anime and 90’s may be more popular then ever. Children and even adults love buying stuffed toys, t-shirts and posters. Here are four highly acclaimed anime movies.
Princess Mononoke (1997)
Princess Mononoke is ranked at third most popular anime movie in Japan. Mononoke are spirits who cause suffering by possessing an individual. It was intended to be the last film produced by Hayao Miyazaki. He instead came back in 2001 with Spirited Away.
My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
One of the most beloved of Japanese anime characters is Totoro. Totoro is known as the Japanese Winnie the Pooh. My Neighbor Totoro was a breakthrough film for Miyazaki.
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
This is a science fiction/ fantasy film of the highest order. The future brings apocalyptic conflict as the ecosystem is devastated. Humans live in a “toxic jungle” and Princess Nausica of the Valley of the Wind talks to insects. Nausicaa must aid in creating a peaceful environment.
Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
Roger Ebert and others claimed this movie to be an extremely powerful war film. Siblings Seita and Setsuko must survive the last part of the Second World War. Dramatic and realistic, even adults are affected by it’s powerful message.
All of these films were produced by Studio Ghibli except Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Other great anime movies include Ghost in the Shell (1995) and Porco Rosso (1992).
